LOVE MAKING: Why some men don’t last

Alcohol, money and sex are believed to be inseparable triplets that men crave for. But the latter seems to top the list of cravings of men, little wonder both the old and the young crave for it.
However, while many engage in it as a fleeting pleasure, others, once they start it, hang on for hours, notwithstanding the inconveniences.

Experts say those that “jump in and out” of it would really wish they could stay longer to savour the pleasure. Yet they are incapacitated by their physiognomy, such as poor erection of the male organ, premature ejaculation and in extreme cases, total impotence. This huge psychological burden results in the breakage of homes.

The fact that this category of men cannot do as they wish, the experts further say, is no fault of theirs.
So what is responsible for the varying degree of engagement in this all-important human endeavour?
Managing Director of Hope Valley Clinic, Dr. Michael Ogunkoya, in an exclusive interview, gave an insight to why some men last longer than others in the act of lovemaking.

According to him, “It is a function of too many things. Men generally reach orgasm faster than women. If you have not made love for a long time, you are likely to reach orgasm faster than if you have made love two hours earlier. Another factor is that younger people tend to have more staying power than older ones. Other factors include use of potency drugs, smoking and alcohol.”

Ogunkoya, further gave details of how duration impacts on lovemaking thus: “If you abstain five days to one week before making love, you will probably produce sperm of 2.5 mil, which is considered normal, but if you abstain for one or two weeks and produce a sperm of 1mil, that is considered small. But if you make love now and repeat it in four hours time, or twelve hours time, certainly you will produce less and less quantity of sperm as time goes on.”

Ogunkoya also warned against heavy consumption of alcohol, which he said could be a depressant.

Erection problem

“Erection is usually part of sexual process. Lack of erection is referred to as impotence and there are various causes. I have heard patients coming to me with this problem. Interestingly 99 per cent of them, have nothing particularly physically wrong. Poor erection or no erection is usually psychogenic. This includes things like stress, tiredness.”

To improve the sexual drive of such men Ogunkoya said: “ The therapy is getting the patient’s attention and talking to them about their work situation, their social life and medical history. Some patients have erection and at the point of penetration they lose it, while some do not have at all. From experience, I found out that by the time you talk to them directly on these points I have mentioned, they usually have good results.

Citing stress level among Lagosians, he paints the picture this way: “Typically in Lagos, the busy schedule which lasts from 5.30 am 10.30pm,issues like vehicular breakdown, indebtedness to the bank, armed robbery harassment all add up to the problem of such men. There is stress and that is very common. This is worsened by other unusual events. Such person may not have good erection when he wants to make love.”

Solution
“If one is having such problems, one way out is to observe rest, eat, relax, you will have erection.
“Non-medicaments that can improve sexual drive and aide potency include rest, good nutrition, and avoidance of alcohol, good hydration.
Alcohols are generally stimulants when taken in little quantities and generally depressants, when taking in higher doses.”

Ejaculation failure
Ogunkoya says ejaculation failure is different from impotence. “Somebody may have erection but cannot ejaculate or ejaculate outside or before penetration. In some men, the opening of the penis is not at the tip where it is suppose to be, so such persons will have problems ejaculating because the sperm may not enter the vagina. Instead, it may drop outside. Those with diabetes may have problems with impotence. Previous injury to the arteries or previous surgical intervention in males could result in low sperm count. This is because sperm is carried from the testis through a tube, out to the penis. Premature ejaculation, retrogressive ejaculation, which occur when, rather than sperm going into the vagina, goes back into the bladder.”

Male infertility
“Males suffer infertility. The contribution of male factor is almost the same with the female factor. The causes are very numerous, ranging from infections of various types; processes involved in reproduction in males, radiation others.”

Radiation effects
“ The most susceptible part of human body are cells that reproduce themselves very fast and that happens in the gonad, ovary and testis and intestinal surfaces. Such effects on testis can cause total shut down of the cells that produce sperm or can cause a diminution in the production of sperm. It could also cause some abnormalities in the sperm structure, which could result in abnormalities in babies.”
